For absolute beginners: Cloth Diapering with SUS 101

If you have been scrolling along the web and find yourself looking at various cloth diaper sites and thinking What does this all mean?! Or thinking things like, ok but how does it all work??? What do I even need to get started??? How do i get started in the first place??? - No worries we have got you covered!

We have put together this guide to help you figure out what everything is and what you will actually need. We know cloth diapers can be quite confusing at first, there are so many sizes and options and a plethora of brands and information available it's hard to not feel overwhelmed or where to begin, so in this post we will break down how our different systems work in simple terms.

POCKET DIAPERS:

Our most popular diapers are what's called a POCKET DIAPER and consist of two parts.

Part 1: the outer SHELL. This is the outer part of the diaper. It's got the pretty colour or pattern printed on the outside, and athletic wicking jersey on the inside that wicks away moisture from skin to help keep baby comfortable and dry. The outer shell itself is NOT absorbent - it does not hold any liquid. It IS however made from water resistant material, which is made to keep the wetness in  and help prevent leaks! Between the outside and inside fabrics is a pocket accessible from either end. This is where your absorbency goes.

Part 2: the ABSORBENCY. Once you decide which style absorbency you will use, you take it and stuff it inside the pocket located on pocket diaper shell. you use only one, or you can use two. There are many different types of inserts and absorbency that vary in fabric composition and capacity.

ALL-IN-TWO DIAPERS:

Another style diaper we offer are what's called a ALL-IN-TWO and they also consist of two parts.

Part 1: the outer SHELL. This is the outer part of the diaper. It's got the pretty colour or pattern printed on the outside, and bamboo cotton on the inside and includes 2 snap in inserts to absorb liquid. These diapers also have 3 built in layers of absorbency and a front pocket to add even more should you need more than it comes with.

Part 2: the ABSORBENCY. The ALL-IN-TWO diapers include 2 inserts, both are 2 layer bamboo cotton. one is a booster and the other is a snake insert you fold in half to get more layers. you use one, or both provided inserts and even add more to the pocket if needed.

COVER SYSTEMS:

Another style diaper we offer are what's called a COVER SYSTEM and they also consist of two parts.

Part 1: the outer SHELL. This is the outer part of the diaper. It's got the pretty colour or pattern printed on the outside, and only the water resistant layer on the inside covers do not absorb any liquid and are designed to cover your choice of absorbency options and provide a water resistant barrier so you don't get leaks.

Part 2: the ABSORBENCY. The COVER diapers can be used with multiple absorbency options such as a fitted diaper, pre-flat or flat diaper these diapers do not have any waterproofing and are essentially a wrap around insert to provide maximum absorbency and are a great option for overnight.

SIZE SELECTION:

The beauty of all of our options is each of the 3 sizes we offer (Newborn, Midsize™, and XXL) each have an inclusive size range to fit smaller and unsnap larger than most diapers on the market so you maximize your size range they can be used for and since they last you longer that means even more money saved and no rushing to switch sizes.

Our Newborn fits most from around 6 lbs to 24lbs.

Our Midsize™ fits about 10lbs up to 65 lbs

Our XXL fits about 25 lbs - 115 lbs

This weight range is a guide only as it definitely depends on your baby's shape. You might find that one diaper brand fits perfectly from start to finish of your little ones diaper days, but it's more likely that as they grow and change shape so much even in the first year, but we have done our best to design a diaper that will fit most babies from start to finish of their cloth journey!
